New Fact Sheet on Embryo Donation

There are thousands of human embryos in cryostorage within Australia, some of which are sometimes referred to as orphan embryos because their fate cannot be determined for various reasons. Others have been donated to research and some are donated to other couples that are unable to have a baby using their own eggs and spermatozoa. Unfortunately, many couples are unable to adopt children, either because of a shortage of babies for adoption or because of age restrictions imposed on those wishing to adopt. However, at ACA our view is that adoption has many similarities to the receipt of donated embryos, but we suspect that the general public has not considered this alternative strategy to adoption.
